Ice Hotels

Four winter places in Norway, Sweden and Finland, described as buildings and sites rather than as experiences. Some are permanent houses that stay open through the polar winter, and others are seasonal camps whose structures are put up and taken down each year. What stands on a site in one season may differ in the next.

Basecamp Hotel Spitsbergen

Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway

Overview

Basecamp Hotel Spitsbergen stands in the centre of Longyearbyen, the main settlement on Svalbard, far north of the Norwegian mainland. It is run as a small hotel rather than as a camp, and it stays open through the polar winter. The house is furnished in the manner of an Arctic trapper's lodge, and a local expedition company operates it.

What it looks like

Timber, driftwood and salvaged ship materials make up much of the interior, from wall panels to fittings. Rooms are small and dark in tone, with bunks and heavy textiles. A shared lounge under a glazed roof serves as the sitting and breakfast area. Maps and objects from the hunting era are used across the walls.

The area

Longyearbyen sits at the head of a fjord, with mountains rising directly behind the street grid. Shops, the church and the museum are within walking distance of the door. Beyond the settlement boundary, travel is regulated, and it is normally arranged through licensed operators rather than undertaken alone.

Practical notes

Daylight varies enormously across the year, and the surroundings stay dark for a long stretch of winter. Ask the hotel about airport transfers and about what walking outside the settlement involves. Guided trips are arranged through the operator in advance rather than settled on arrival.

Sápmi Nature Camp

Gällivare, Sweden

Overview

Sápmi Nature Camp is a small seasonal camp in Swedish Lapland, north of the Arctic Circle and close to the Laponia World Heritage area, outside Gällivare. It is a camp rather than a permanent hotel building. Guests stay in heated lavvu tents, and a host from a local reindeer-herding family runs the place.

What it looks like

Each lavvu is a tent on a wooden platform, fitted with a bed, textiles and a wood-burning stove. A heated log cabin holds the lounge, the reception and the dining table shared by everyone. There is no mains electricity on site, so light comes from candles, battery lamps and solar power. A wood-heated sauna stands apart.

The area

The camp lies in forest close to water, away from street lighting and passing traffic. Reindeer herding continues on the surrounding land, which is used by people who live and work there. Gällivare and Jokkmokk are the nearest towns, and the camp is reached from them by road.

Practical notes

Only a small number of guests stay at one time, so contact the camp well ahead. Ask which part of the year the camp keeps open and how guests are brought in. Warm outer clothing matters here, and quiet behaviour around working land is expected.

Holiday Village Inari

Inari, Finland

Overview

Holiday Village Inari is a cabin village on the shore of Lake Inari in northern Finnish Lapland, beside the village of Inari itself. It is not a single hotel building but a set of separate cabins arranged near the water, kept open through the year. Sámi cultural institutions in the village stand close by.

What it looks like

The site holds shoreline cabins, panorama cabins, sauna studios and aurora cabins with glazed sections above the beds. Buildings are low, clad in timber and spread out with trees between them. Several cabins have their own fireplace and sauna. Paths link the cabins to the shore and to the reception building.

The area

Lake Inari opens out directly in front of the village, and the water is visible from much of the site. The centre of Inari is a short walk away, with the Sámi museum and the nature centre nearby. The road north towards the border runs through the village.

Practical notes

Cabin types differ a good deal, so check what a given cabin includes before booking. Northern lights depend on weather and darkness and cannot be promised by anyone. Ask about winter road conditions, and about which services on the site stay open outside the main season.

Isokenkäisten Klubi

Kuusamo, Finland

Overview

Isokenkäisten Klubi is a family-run wilderness lodge in north-eastern Finland, set by a lake rather than in a town. Published sources place it near Lake Heikinjärvi in the Kuusamo district, at some distance from Ruka and from the main roads. Accommodation is divided between lodge rooms, guest house rooms, log cottages and glass-roofed huts.

What it looks like

Buildings are timber, low and grouped near the shore, with cottages standing apart from the main house. Each cottage has a fireplace and its own sauna. A large smoke sauna belongs to the site, together with a dining room where meals are served. The glass-roofed huts stand close to the water.

The area

Forest and lake surround the lodge, and the border zone lies a short distance to the east. There is no settlement at the door, so arrival is by road through woodland. Marked routes for walking, skiing and snowshoeing run out from the ground around the site.

Practical notes

The lodge is remote, so agree on arrival times and directions in advance. Meals are usually arranged with the house rather than found nearby. Ask which cottages and huts are in use during the season you plan to visit, and what the sauna and heating arrangements involve.
